Introduction / History

The Orowe live in New Caledonia, especially in the Bourail area on the west coast of Grande Terre, the main island. They are part of the wider Kanak peoples of New Caledonia, whose communities have long been shaped by clan life, ties to ancestral land, and the deep disruptions of French colonial rule and mission influence. In this setting, the Orowe belong to the southern New Caledonian cultural and linguistic world of Grande Terre.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Orowe are associated with the Bourail region of Grande Terre, where Kanak life has historically centered on tribe and clan communities tied to customary land. In New Caledonia, Kanak communities commonly live in village or tribal settings rather than dense urban centers, with ordinary life shaped by extended family obligations, customary authority, and connection to local land. Depending on location, livelihoods often include small-scale gardening, local wage work, cattle-related work in western districts, fishing, and movement between tribal areas and nearby towns. Their language, Orowe, is one of the Kanak languages of southern Grande Terre, though French is widely used across New Caledonia and often functions as the broader language of education, administration, and intergroup communication.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Orowe identify outwardly as Christian. Even so, outward Christian profession does not necessarily mean deep biblical understanding, spiritual maturity, or genuine conversion. In communities with long exposure to Christianity, there can still be a need for stronger discipleship, sound doctrine, and faithful church life so that belief is rooted in Scripture rather than in inherited identity alone. Scripture is available in their language.

What Are Their Needs?

The Orowe need believers who are firmly grounded in the gospel and who live out biblical truth with clarity and perseverance. They need faithful pastors, elders, and teachers who can strengthen churches with sound doctrine and guard against nominal Christianity. Strong Christian families, enduring discipleship, and healthy local congregations are important so that the next generation is formed by God's Word rather than by cultural habit alone. Because they have a strong Christian base, they also need a renewed missionary burden so that believers among them would carry the gospel faithfully to other ethnic groups around them.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Orowe would not rest in outward Christian identity alone, but would grow in genuine repentance, faith, and obedience.
Pray that the Lord would raise up faithful pastors, elders, and teachers among them who handle Scripture rightly.
Pray for strong Christian homes and for the next generation to be discipled in truth.
Pray that churches among the Orowe would remain spiritually healthy, biblically grounded, and enduring.
Pray that believers among the Orowe would carry the gospel faithfully to other ethnic groups.
